ATP-TIMS Tool

The Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) has been developed by UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) to provide quick, easy and free access to California crash data, the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) that has been geo-coded by SafeTREC to make it easy to map out crashes.

Over the past several years, the ATRC has worked with SafeTREC to develop an ATP-TIMS Tool to display bicycle and pedestrian crashes along a proposed project boundary in a heat map relative to that specific community. This allows for a data-driven methodology to evaluate a proposed project’s likely impact on future safety of active transportation users. The ATP-TIMS Tool was successfully and effectively used in ATP Cycle 4 and the ATRC is working with SafeTREC to enhance the tool by:

  • Making minor refinements based on stakeholder feedback.
  • Refining the suite of graphs in the output report.
  • Creating a new feature that will allow a user to create a Before/After Report of crash data for specific project limits.
