WEBINAR: Healthy Places Index

Originally presented February 20, 2020

This webinar gives an overview of the California Healthy Places Index (HPI) tool. HPI provides overall scores for communities and more detailed data on specific policy action areas that address the social determinants of health, such as housing, economic opportunity, education, transportation, neighborhood characteristics, and more. Presenters outline how the HPI tool has been used by local jurisdictions to assess and justify support for active and sustainable transportation initiatives and to determine disadvantaged community status in various grant programs.

About the HPI: Developed by the Public Health Alliance of Southern California, the HPI allows users to explore underlying local factors associated with life expectancy and to compare community conditions statewide, at multiple geographies down to the Census tract level. The HPI provides overall scores for communities and more detailed data on specific policy action areas that address the social determinants of health, such as housing, economic opportunity, education, transportation, neighborhood characteristics, and more. With its user-friendly maps and data sources at the census tract level, and detailed policy action guides for improving community conditions, the HPI can be used to illustrate health, social, and economic disparities across geographies of interest.
