Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP) – Workshop Series 1

Pedestrian fatalities escalated 53 percent between 2009 and 2018, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Crashes with vehicles killed 6,283 pedestrians in 2018, the highest number since 1990. To help address this national safety problem, the Every Day Counts (EDC) initiative on safe transportation for every pedestrian (STEP) is promoting proven safety countermeasures for pedestrian crossings. By focusing on all pedestrian crossing locations, urban and rural, and taking a systemic approach, agencies can comprehensively address a significant national safety problem and improve quality of life for pedestrians of all ages and abilities. Cost-effective countermeasures can be systemically applied to reduce these crashes and save lives.

FHWA expert instructors, Peter Eun and Timothy Taylor with the FHWA Resource Center share their bicycle and pedestrian safety expertise. Peter & Timothy will introduce and discuss the Spectacular Seven Countermeasures. Participants will receive a chance to weigh-in on what future trainings will look like based on agency needs and feedback.
