This course is based on the California School Crossing Guard Training Program: Administration and Training Guidelines.***edit link**** This course can be used directly by new and continuing Crossing Guards, or as a train-the-trainer course to prepare local programs to have Crossing Guard Trainers who train new and continuing Crossing Guards.

The California Crossing Guard Training Course is made up of four components:

  1. Crossing Guard Training Presentation – a recorded video and accompanying presentation slides.
  2. Testing – a short quiz on the Crossing Guard Training Presentation. Crossing Guards must complete and pass this test in order to move on to Practical Training and Field Assessment. A minimum passing score of 80 percent is required.
  3. Practical Training – hands-on instruction from a Crossing Guard Trainer. This component involves role play and simulation to practice the techniques and procedures used to safely and effectively cross student pedestrians.
  4. Field Assessment – observation, additional training, and guidance from a Crossing Guard Trainer. The Crossing Guard candidate will perform crossing duties and procedures at the crossing location while having their performance evaluated by the Crossing Guard Trainer.

This online course includes the Crossing Guard Training Presentation and Testing components of the California Crossing Guard Training Course. The Practical Training and Field Assessment components are offered separately by Local Program Crossing Guard Trainers. A Local Program refers to any city, county, school, school district, or police department that is the fiscal and/or implementing agency responsible for Crossing Guard employment and training. The Practical Training and Field Assessment components may also be offered through sessions scheduled by the Active Transportation Resource Center (ATRC), when funding allows. You can check if the ATRC is currently offering these sessions by checking the Classroom/Online Training page.

A Note for Crossing Guard Trainers

If you are using this course as a train-the-trainer course, we ask that you complete the Crossing Guard Training Presentation and Testing components. Once you complete these components, you can request access via the Post-Training Survey to Information for Crossing Guard Trainers: Crossing Guard Training Course and other materials that you can use to conduct your own training sessions. Crossing Guard Trainers can choose to hold their own online or classroom Crossing Guard Training Presentations and Testing before proceeding to the Practical Training and Field Assessment components, or instruct trainees to complete the presentation and test components through this online course.

It is at the discretion of the Local Programs to determine appropriate placement of Crossing Guards upon completion of each part of the training. Upon completion of all training components, including the Field Assessment, it is left to the discretion of Local Programs to determine Crossing Guards’ mastery of crossing policies and procedures before assignment to a school crossing location.
