We are excited to announce the relaunch of the ATRC’s online training courses on a new platform integrated with the ATRC’s website, following the discontinuation of the original online course platform in May 2026.
We invite you to enroll in these free, self-paced courses. If you enrolled in one of the online courses previously using the Canvas platform, you will need to create a new user account.
Introduction to Active Transportation Planning and Design
This course is intended to introduce active transportation planning and design concepts to planners, engineers, public health practitioners, community-based organizations, and other champions with no or limited experience with the topic. Through the course, you will explore the tools used to assess and evaluate the suitability of transportation infrastructure for use by all types of bicyclists and pedestrians, learn about California’s commitment to support all modes of transportation, and receive an overview of basic pedestrian and bicycle planning and design standards, guidance, and tools.
Active Transportation Planning Special Topics
These modules provide more in-depth instruction and information about topics not covered in the ATRC’s Introduction to Active Transportation Planning and Design training. The modules are intended to be independent of each other, and modules on additional topics will be added over time. You do not to need to complete every module. Choose the topics most interesting and relevant to your work. Six topical modules are currently available.
We have also launched two new online trainings!
Through this course, learn how to plan and lead a walk or bike audit in your own community; how to identify safety, accessibility, and design challenges impacting walking and biking; and how to turn findings into action by sharing recommendations that support safer, more walkable and bikeable communities.
California Crossing Guard Training
This training program can be used directly by new and continuing Crossing Guards, or as a train-the-trainer course to prepare local programs to have Crossing Guard Trainers who train new and continuing Crossing Guards. The ATRC offers a free online course that includes the Crossing Guard Training Presentation and Testing components of the California Crossing Guard Training Course. The Practical Training and Field Assessment components must be completed in-person, separate from the online course.
